What to Do When Your eScript
Says Already Dispensed

You're at the pharmacy, QR code ready on your phone, and the pharmacist tells you your eScript has already been dispensed — but you never collected it. Here's exactly what's happening and what to do.

At the pharmacy right now?

Ask the pharmacist to check the dispense history — they can look up which pharmacy dispensed the token and on what date. This takes 60 seconds. If the original token was lost or sent in error, your prescriber can reissue it. For a repeat token, contact the pharmacy that last dispensed the medication.

Prevent this confusion next time — keep a personal record of your eScripts and repeats in MediRemind.

Your personal script record — eScripts, repeats and refill reminders in one place

What does 'already dispensed' mean?

An eScript in Australia is a single-use digital token. Once it's been dispensed at a pharmacy, the system marks it as used and it cannot be dispensed again for the same supply. This is a deliberate safety feature to prevent the same prescription being filled twice.

When a pharmacist sees 'already dispensed', it means the national prescription database has recorded a successful dispense for that token — somewhere, at some time.

5 reasons your eScript might say already dispensed

1. Someone else collected it for you

A family member, carer, or partner may have collected the medication on your behalf and forgotten to tell you. This is the most common explanation — check with anyone who has access to your phone or your prescription token.

2. You collected it and forgot

If you manage multiple medications it's easy to lose track. Check your medicine cabinet, recent pharmacy receipts, or your Medicare prescription history at my.gov.au before assuming something is wrong.

3. A pharmacist scanned it during verification

Some pharmacies scan the token to verify it's valid before processing. In some cases, a scan during this process may register in the pharmacy system before the dispense is completed. The pharmacy where this occurred can check the record and clarify.

4. A technical error in the system

The My Health Record and eScript systems occasionally experience sync issues. A dispense at one pharmacy may not update correctly, or a system error may have created an incorrect status. This is uncommon but does happen — your pharmacist can assist with checking.

5. A paper script was dispensed for the same medication

If your GP issued both a paper script and an eScript for the same medication, dispensing one may affect the other depending on how the prescribing system linked them. Your GP or pharmacist can check whether this applies.

What to do — step by step

1

Ask the pharmacist to check the dispense history. They can look up which pharmacy dispensed the token and on what date. This takes 60 seconds and usually resolves the confusion immediately.

2

Check your Medicare prescription history. Go to my.gov.au, sign in with myGov, and navigate to Medicare, then Prescription history. Every dispense linked to your Medicare number is recorded here with date and pharmacy.

3

If genuinely not dispensed, contact your GP. Your GP can issue a replacement prescription with a note explaining the situation. Most GPs will do this promptly when given a clear explanation.

4

If someone used your eScript without permission, report it to your GP, the dispensing pharmacy, and Medicare. If the medication was a controlled substance, consider reporting to police.

5

Contact Medicare on 132 011 if you believe there has been a fraudulent claim against your Medicare number.

The most common cause of 'already dispensed' confusion is not having a clear personal record of which scripts have been collected, which are still active, and how many repeats remain. Keeping that record in one place is what MediRemind is built for.

Frequently asked questions

Q

Can an eScript be re-issued if dispensed by mistake?

A

Yes. Contact your GP and explain the situation. They can issue a new prescription. If it was dispensed fraudulently, also report it to Medicare on 132 011.

Q

How do I check if my eScript has been dispensed?

A

Log in to my.gov.au and check your Medicare prescription history. Every dispense linked to your Medicare number is recorded there with date and pharmacy.

Q

What if the pharmacist says it was dispensed at a pharmacy I've never been to?

A

This could indicate prescription fraud. Report it to your GP, the dispensing pharmacy's management, and Medicare immediately. For controlled substances, also notify the police.

Q

Can I still access my repeats if the original was dispensed in error?

A

Your repeats are separate tokens and should still be valid. Ask your pharmacist to check the repeat status. If a repeat is also flagged incorrectly, your GP can assist with rectifying the issue through the prescribing system.

Q

What is the best app for tracking eScripts in Australia?

A

MediRemind is a leading Australian app that combines eScript tracking, medication reminders, and family profiles in one place. Download free on iOS and Android.
