Searching for "Wegovy pill" or "Wegovy tablet"?
There is no Wegovy tablet available in Australia. An oral version was approved in the US in December 2025. It is not TGA-approved here and has no confirmed Australian launch date. What is semaglutide?
Semaglutide is a GLP-1 receptor agonist, a type of medication that mimics the GLP-1 hormone, which regulates blood sugar and appetite. Novo Nordisk, the Danish pharmaceutical company, manufactures both Wegovy and Rybelsus using semaglutide as the active ingredient. Despite sharing the same active ingredient, the two products are absorbed differently, use different doses and have different approved indications. Rybelsus is registered in Australia as an oral semaglutide medicine.

Is there a Wegovy pill available in Australia?
An oral version of Wegovy was approved in the United States in December 2025. It is not currently TGA-approved or available as Wegovy tablets in Australia. There is no confirmed Australian launch date.
Australians searching for 'Wegovy pill' or 'Wegovy tablet' are likely responding to news of the US approval, oral Wegovy launched commercially in the United States in January 2026, which is what is driving the searches. Until an oral Wegovy form is registered here by the TGA, it cannot be legally prescribed or sold in Australia. For the latest on any TGA submission or Australian timeline, check TGA.gov.au.
The oral semaglutide product that is available in Australia is Rybelsus, which is registered for Type 2 diabetes, not weight management, as described above.

Can I use Rybelsus for weight loss?
Rybelsus does cause weight reduction, studies in people with Type 2 diabetes showed reductions in body weight as a secondary effect. However, it is not approved or PBS-listed in Australia for weight management.
Australian doctors can legally prescribe any TGA-approved medicine off-label. That is, for a purpose other than its approved indication. If a doctor prescribes Rybelsus for weight management, you would pay the full private price, not the PBS co-payment, because the subsidy applies only to the approved Type 2 diabetes indication.
Wegovy was specifically studied and approved for chronic weight management. Rybelsus is approved in Australia for Type 2 diabetes and should not be regarded as an interchangeable tablet version of injectable Wegovy.
If weight management is your goal, speak to your doctor about which treatment is appropriate for your circumstances.
