Searching for "Wegovy pill" or "Wegovy tablet"?

There is no Wegovy tablet available in Australia. An oral version was approved in the US in December 2025. It is not TGA-approved here and has no confirmed Australian launch date. The oral semaglutide that does exist in Australia is called Rybelsus, and it is approved only for Type 2 diabetes, not weight management.

What is semaglutide?

Semaglutide is a GLP-1 receptor agonist, a type of medication that mimics the GLP-1 hormone, which regulates blood sugar and appetite. Novo Nordisk, the Danish pharmaceutical company, manufactures both Wegovy and Rybelsus using semaglutide as the active ingredient. Despite sharing the same active ingredient, the two products are absorbed differently, use different doses and have different approved indications. Rybelsus is registered in Australia as an oral semaglutide medicine.

Wegovy, the weekly injection for weight management

Wegovy is semaglutide in a prefilled auto-injector pen for subcutaneous injection. An injection just under the skin, typically into the abdomen, thigh or upper arm.

How you take itOne injection per week, on the same day each week.
TGA-approved forChronic weight management in eligible adults. Wegovy is also approved for reducing major cardiovascular risk in adults with established cardiovascular disease and overweight or obesity. Wegovy launched commercially in Australia in August 2024; the cardiovascular indication was approved separately in December 2024.
Dose scheduleStarts at 0.25 mg weekly, escalating every four weeks through 0.5 mg, 1.0 mg and 1.7 mg to a maintenance dose of 2.4 mg per week. The full escalation takes approximately 16 weeks.
PBS statusPBS status as at July 2026: Wegovy is not yet PBS-listed. PBAC has recommended a restricted listing for certain eligible patients with established cardiovascular disease, but listing and pricing negotiations are not yet finalised. Last checked: July 2026.
Cost in AustraliaApproximately $269–$460 per month on a private prescription, depending on your current dose stage and pharmacy. The 2.4 mg maintenance dose is the most expensive.
StorageRefrigerate before first use (2–8°C). After first use, pens can be kept at room temperature below 30°C for up to six weeks.

Rybelsus, the daily tablet for Type 2 diabetes

Rybelsus is an oral GLP-1 medicine registered in Australia for Type 2 diabetes, not for weight management.

How you take itOne tablet every morning, on a completely empty stomach, with no more than 120 mL of plain water. You must wait at least 30 minutes before eating, drinking anything other than plain water, or taking other medications. Oral semaglutide has low bioavailability, food and other liquids significantly reduce how much the body absorbs.
TGA approved forType 2 diabetes mellitus in adults, as an adjunct to diet and exercise. Rybelsus is not approved in Australia for weight management.
Dose scheduleStarting dose is 3 mg daily for 30 days, then increased to 7 mg daily, with an optional further increase to 14 mg if needed.
PBS statusListed on the PBS in Australia for eligible patients with Type 2 diabetes. Patients pay the standard PBS co-payment. This subsidy does not apply if Rybelsus is prescribed off-label for weight management.
CostUp to $25 per PBS dispensing for general patients, or $7.70 for concession patients. Brand premiums or other charges may apply. Considerably less than private prescription pricing. (PBS rates from 1 July 2026.)
StorageRoom temperature, below 30°C. No refrigeration required.

Is there a Wegovy pill available in Australia?

An oral version of Wegovy was approved in the United States in December 2025. It is not currently TGA-approved or available as Wegovy tablets in Australia. There is no confirmed Australian launch date.

Australians searching for 'Wegovy pill' or 'Wegovy tablet' are likely responding to news of the US approval, oral Wegovy launched commercially in the United States in January 2026, which is what is driving the searches. Until an oral Wegovy form is registered here by the TGA, it cannot be legally prescribed or sold in Australia. For the latest on any TGA submission or Australian timeline, check TGA.gov.au.

The oral semaglutide product that is available in Australia is Rybelsus, which is registered for Type 2 diabetes, not weight management, as described above.

Can I use Rybelsus for weight loss?

Rybelsus does cause weight reduction, studies in people with Type 2 diabetes showed reductions in body weight as a secondary effect. However, it is not approved or PBS-listed in Australia for weight management.

Australian doctors can legally prescribe any TGA-approved medicine off-label. That is, for a purpose other than its approved indication. If a doctor prescribes Rybelsus for weight management, you would pay the full private price, not the PBS co-payment, because the subsidy applies only to the approved Type 2 diabetes indication.

Wegovy was specifically studied and approved for chronic weight management. Rybelsus is approved in Australia for Type 2 diabetes and should not be regarded as an interchangeable tablet version of injectable Wegovy.

If weight management is your goal, speak to your doctor about which treatment is appropriate for your circumstances.
